Understanding Disease Mechanisms Through Network Medicine and Multi-Omics Integration

abstract: Understanding the intricate biological systems that shape an individual’s characteristics and phenotypes requires moving beyond a simple one-to-one mapping of genes to traits. Network medicine offers a robust framework for uncovering disease mechanisms by analysing interactions among biological entities. This talk will present my research on integrating multi-omics data with network-based models to enhance disease understanding and prediction. I will discuss novel methods for constructing personalised protein-protein interaction networks, incorporating patient-specific factors to advance precision medicine. Additionally, I will explore the role of genome-wide association studies in identifying causal genetic variants influencing diverse biological entities and phenotypes, shedding light on underlying disease pathways. Finally, I will introduce my ongoing work on multi-layer graph representations that integrate genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data, paving the way for interpretable pathway predictive models.
